We flew for 4 hours with the new Whirl Wind 3 blade propeller for the UL 350IS and I must say I am impressed. 3300 RPM for takeoff and the propeller would out climb the “Brand X Propeller”, however the cruise RPM was too high. So that we added 2 degrees of pitch and could take with 3000 RPM, the rate of climb was still 1400 feet per minute. Now I cruise with 100 less RPM than the “Brand X” at 96 MPH and 2560RPM. This is the best preforming propeller we have tested. And we’ve tested all the big name brands.

Here are Pictures of our new UL 350 3 blade Whirlwind propeller during the partial solar eclipse. Fitting because this prop has eclipsed all the others we have tested so far.

First off, thanks for your help getting me set up with what I needed for my Rebel. The prop works fantastic! Flew it out to Prescott, AZ yesterday, and the plane has never performed so well. I’ve gained 15 knots in cruise between the prop efficiency, the ability to set the pitch, and the rebuilt engine. That’s pretty amazing for a draggy bushplane!

Dear Whirl Wind,

Today I finally had the opportunity to install my new WhirlWind GA200L 72″ propeller on my Storm 400 with Lyc.O-320 E2A 150 Hp. engine.  I removed my Sensenich Wood 68″/ 84″pitch propeller after 20 hours of test flights with it.   I calculated the inches of pitch of the wood Sensenich 84″ geometric-pitch to be approximately 20.5° at 2/3 of the blade from the root.  And I set my GA200L propeller at the similar angle which gave me exactly the RPM I wanted. The performance with the ĢA200L propeller is simply amazing!  Takeoff distance (in similar conditions) is estimated 35-40% less distance.  Top IAS at 2500 RPM it’s over 160 Kias ! 

I look forward to flying with this propeller for a long while.

Hi WhirlWind!!

I did a test flight today at 2700 rpm the indicated speed was well over 190 kts with true airspeed of 200 knots at 3000 ft. The airplane was still gradually accelerating but I stopped the test at 2700 rpm. Needless to say, the performance is incredible and I really like the quality fit and finish and durability too. Unlike my old FP prop I was stuck with less than optimum pitch, no need to send prop back to M.F.G. to be repitched (and wait and wait).

Your GA200-68 made my already great performing Tailwind perform even better in all phases of flight.
Take off distance was reduce by  15%, Rate of Climb increased 300fpm, and top speed increased 9 mph to 195mph on lyc-0290
Plus prop is super smooth and with the nickel leading edge. When encountering rain, there is no need to reduce rpm unlike my old prop.

I have a few experiences of the WhirlWind GA200L I would like to share…
– The engine runs smoother
– Fuel consumption appears to have decreased by 5-10%
– Take off performance and climb performance is better, by appr. 10%
– The noise level is much more quiet (15-20% compared to my previous propeller)
– The customer service is pretty good, too!

*The Prince P-tip I had before had a noise level of 77.1 DbA. The WhirlWind GA200L is just 72.2 DbA. As the decibel scale is logarithmic, it represents about 15-20% less noise.

**I have also received my European “Certificate of Environmental Quality – Noise” that can be shared with others in Europe who wish to use your propeller. ”

Hello Whirlwind propellers.

I thought I would let you know how pleased I am with the GA200L propeller on my GlaStar. It was easy to fit and on initial adjustment to 20° pitch I noted similar take-off performance to my previous metal propeller (74 x 64”), but a large increase in cruise speed with rpm. However, I could only reach 2600 rpm in level flight. I turned down the pitch to 18.5° and noted a marked increase in take-off acceleration and climb with 2350 rpm static as opposed to 2250 rpm with the previous propeller. In cruise I had slightly increased speed per rpm and could just reach red line (2700 rpm) with my Lycoming O-320 160 hp engine.

Contrary to my expectation of increased cruise efficiency, I have better take-off performance and slightly increased cruise speed. However, fuel economy seems unchanged. I also liked the use of Nord-Lock washers to secure the bolts as this made changing the pitch less trouble than securing with safety wire.

It is half the weight of my previous metal propeller. This made shipping less costly and the slip of a girl who delivers our mail brought the box to the door with no effort.

In sum, this prop really grabs the air and offers enhanced flexibility in performance at a considerable weight saving. It also looks a highly crafted product.

GA-200CN (2-Blade) Propeller for Continental 0200 and Lycoming 0233/0235

The prop works great, about 15 MPH faster at the same RPM setting as with the other prop and an increase of 300 FPM climb. I am going to play with different pitch settings, I’ll let you know.

1) Performance, Innovation, Efficiency

The aerodynamics, pressure/velocity profiles, and three dimensional flow patterns through an aircraft propeller are an order of magnitude more complex than the airflow acting on an equivalent wing. To optimize propeller thrust and maximize achieved aircraft performance, propeller design must balance numerous factors including blade area, aspect ratio, and velocity profile. As such, WhirlWind Propellers employs the most technologically advanced computer flow modeling tools, and incorporates custom designed proprietary airfoil sections from root to tip. Airfoil transitions and blended sections take advantage of the latest understanding and advances in aero-science. Better optimized blade shapes, taper ratios, and thinner, more aggressively tapered tips have been developed by WhirlWind to minimize the induced drag losses that reduce effective engine output and delivered thrust.To ensure that higher performance is actually achieved in real-world conditions, WhirlWind includes the effects of aircraft size, shape, speed range, and mission profile in our performance calculations. This data is then incorporated into the final optimized propeller design. For a given diameter, high speed aircraft will see an increase in cruise performance from less blade area. STOL / utility type aircraft will benefit from greater thrust on takeoff and climb with slightly larger area. Blade twist distribution must be matched to the subject aircraft’s speed, engine RPM, and the size and shape of the cowling, so that the discrepancies between theoretical and actual pressures, velocities and flow behaviors are kept to a minimum.Without such a thorough, scientific approach at the design stage, measurable losses in performance will be “built in” over the life of the propeller.

2) Structural Design and Testing

There are several forces acting upon a propeller in flight, including centrifugal, bending, torsional, and dynamic. Torsional loads, lift loads (thrust), and dynamic loads can combine at certain speed and RPM ranges to create potentially dangerous resonance conditions. WhirlWind Propellers uses an advanced proprietary load simulation program to analyze and predict the forces that create these dynamic vibration and resonance conditions. Based on this data, we are able to optimize the composite layup schedule for each blade design, to deliver the correct balance of strength and stiffness versus flexibility. Propeller structures must have flexural properties to allow limited (and predictable) amounts of movement without approaching a “yield” failure of the composite matrix… but they must also retain enough stiffness to prevent the onset of dynamic resonance or instability.After the initial analysis, WhirlWind uses the latest and most advanced test equipment to verify and physically test each propeller design. First, a ground-based Vibration Survey is used to predict the flight conditions where resonance could occur. Strain gauges are then installed on the propeller blades, and the propeller is flight tested though the entire operational design range plus a safety factor. The strain gauge data validates our engineering process in real-world conditions. Thanks to extensive design and engineering capabilities, backed up by real-world flight testing, WhirlWind Propellers have no “Service Life” limits or restricted operating RPM ranges.

GA200L (2-Blade) Propeller for Lycoming O-320 / IO-360

Designed for Performance

GA200L propeller is a purpose designed for RV airplanes with special attention to top end speed and cruise performance. Design features are optimized blade area, twist distribution and highly taped plan form for minimum induced drag. Even the cowl and fuse shape was taken into account when designing blade shape, twist and airfoils.

Why WhirlWind Ground Adjustable propeller?

  • You only need to buy one propeller.
  • Performance flexibility ; pitch to your performance preference, top end speed or super-efficient cruise.
  • With a conventional fixed pitch (FP) propeller, small airframe clean up modifications and engine performance changes can necessitate a  propeller change / re-pitch. With the 200GA propeller you can immediately take advantage of airframe/engine performance improvements simply by making a small pitch adjustment without the need of buying a new propeller or waiting to get the FP re-pitched.
  • The propeller is very durable with the Nickle leading edge from rain, sand and abrasion. It is well tested and proven.

WhirlWind Propellers offers carbon fiber spinners laminated with epoxy resin, trimmed and fitted specifically to our propellers, and ready to fly. These  spinners are manufactured with the same craftsmanship and attention to detail as our propellers. Spinners are finished with a white primer ready for painting or 12” Spinners are also available in a Carbon (Dark Matter) finish–a clear semi-gloss gel coat over the natural carbon fiber. For maximum gloss and UV Protection, it is recommended that the customer apply a clear urethane top coat over the Dark Matter finish.

All Spinner Orders Include Spinner Dome, Back Plate, and Hardware (nut plates pre-installed).

Choosing a Spinner:

  1. Only consider spinners compatible with your specific WhirlWind propeller
  2. Find dimension [C] for each compatible spinner option
  3. Engine flange or spacer must protrude from cowling by (dimension [C] + 0.2”)
  4. Choose from compatible spinners based on appropriate diameter for cowling and personal preference
